The community of Sunset Park is home to about 150,000 residents, and at its heart is its namesake, a 25-acre park that locals love to visit all year long. The park offers breathtaking views, a pool, a memorial for the victims of September 11th, ball courts, walking paths and more.
From the park’s highest point, you can see the green hills of New Jersey and Staten Island, Brooklyn’s lively neighborhoods, the Manhattan skyline, and even the Statue of Liberty. In the summer months, people love to use the park’s green areas and swimming pool. The pool was built in the 1930s in classic art deco style and today offers a range of recreational activities for people of all ages. Activities include swim lessons, after school swimming programs, and adult lap times. There’s also a wading pool for children, and the pool is used as the training location for the Brooklyn Swim Team.
Sunset Park features a food cart, restrooms, dog run areas, handball courts, showers, and more. There is also a recreation center that offers a number of activities and programs all year long. The recreation center houses a Computer Recreation Center with nine computers, a library, a dance room, and a workout room with cardio equipment and free weights.
The Sunset Park Memorial Grove was the first Living Memorial Grove in New York City to commemorate those lost in the attacks of September 11, 2001. The twin towers of the World Trade Center had been visible from the park. The Sunset Park Memorial Grove consists of 45 Trees planted in an oval along with a triangular garden with 78 White Carpet roses, 70 Cotoneaster shrubs and 3,000 White Dwarf narcissus plants.
Any trip to the community of Sunset Park wouldn’t be complete without a visit to its namesake park, which is one of the neighborhood’s hidden treasures.
